In 1824 Tsunemasa Iwasaki published a seven-volume picture book entitled Nikkō San Sōmoku no Zu (Nikkō Mountains Illustrated Flora). It included the 252 color pictures of plants shown in this gallery. Click on a thumbnail to enlarge it. Tsunemasa’s drawing style was influenced by European botanical art and he drew his picture subjects accurately. However, some of the plants are still difficult to identify because they ressemble others and their Japanese names given by Tsunemasa are no longer used. These unidentified plants are called ‘unknown’ here.
